Angela Armstrong, or Angie, is the novel's primary protagonist. Angie is a young single woman living in South Florida. She owns Discreet Captures, an independent company responsible for remediating local animal problems. After her older husband, Dustin, cheats on her and ends their marriage, Angie devotes herself entirely to her work. Despite her split with Dustin, she maintains a close relationship with her stepson, Joel.
At the start of the novel, the manager of Lipid House calls Angie to handle a Burmese python on the mansion's property. Not long after euthanizing the snake, Angie's home and storage unit are burglarized. She does not realize the reason until after hearing about Kiki Pew Fitzsimmons's disappearance. She concludes that the mysterious bulge in the python's stomach was Kiki, and the burglars, Uric and Keever, wanted to steal the snake in order to dispose of the body inside it.
