Summary
Part 2 begins with another stream-of-consciousness diatribe from the perspective of Big Data. It is a repetitive screed on harvesting digital data and the type of dystopian society envisioned from this industrial practice.
The second chapter follows suit, from the ironic perspective of migrant, imploring the reader to “Take my face” (109). “My face is a breaking point” (110) the imagined anonymous narrator insists. It is what keeps fears and meagre privileges operative in contemporary dysfunctional society.
Then Smith introduces the character of Brittany Hall. Brittany is a low-level security agent at a migrant detention center. The drudgery of her life and work is soul-crushing. She was once a clever pupil. But since she comes from a working-class family continuing into higher education is beyond her means. Thus, she has settled into a life of casual cruelty in a job that functions as a factory of dehumanization...
