Chicago serves as a backdrop for the novel although the characters' focus is turned more inward, minimizing the role of the city. Chicago is also a source of disappointment and confusion for the characters who have not been able to move on with their lives. For example, Irene's return home represents a failure of independence from her family and a lack of financial stability.

This location also travels through time during the characters' recollections of the past.
