Summary
Teddy Telemachus explains that his goal since Maureen’s death is to fall in love at least once a day. He sees a woman browsing in the organic foods aisle of the supermarket and is immediately taken with her and she introduces herself as Graciella.
Teddy flashes back to the first time he met Maureen in a classroom at the University of Chicago while signing up for a psychic study. He even draws a small sketch of the doctor, telling the secretary that “when I was filling out the forms I kept getting this image. Somebody who was really interested in what was happening here today. It kept popping up, so I started doodling” (27). Teddy knows that his so-called vision is a farce, but he realizes that he needs to have his psychic abilities verified so that he can “upgrade his act” (27). He leaves...
