Summary
Chapter 39
Lizzie Rose wakes on Christmas morning and cannot find Parsefall. Lizzie Rose takes the dog down to the lake and recalls one of her favorite memories with her parents when they went ice skating together. For this reason, Lizzie Rose gets her mother’s skates from her belongings and goes skating on the outer edge of the frozen lake.
Chapter 40
In London, Dr. Wintermute is passing a sad, quiet Christmas alone with his wife and the servants. They argue after Dr. Wintermute refuses to go to the cemetery with his wife and suggests that Clara might still be there had Mrs. Wintermute not forced her to grieve for so long. Mrs. Wintermute sees this as an accusation and argues with him.
