Time Out of Joint Summary
Five years after the October Event, E.D. Lawton secretly reveals to his son Jason the truth about the Spin. By this time, his aerostats manufacturing company has become very powerful and his political influence has grown immensely. The teenagers attend a sledding party during which Diane sets up a disastrous date for Tyler. Later that evening, Jason relays to Diane and Tyler the information that his father told him earlier: Scientists have discovered that Earth is wrapped in a membrane that filters out objects, radiations and even time. In effect, this means that time passes much faster outside of the Spin than it does inside the Earth's atmosphere.
