Bernie Manuelito

Bernie is one of the main characters of the book. Bernie works as a police officer with the Navajo Police Department. She’s shown to be a very skilled detective, often putting together the evidence before any of the other characters. Bernie is also very good when it comes to interviewing possible suspects. She always knows the right things to say, and she seems to come up with the right questions to ask.

Bernie is very close to her family, and she constantly takes time out of her day to go and visit them. She’s very protective of her mother, and she wants her sister to start doing something with her life because she recognizes the potential that she has. These feelings are extended to the Navajo people, and Bernie is very proud of her heritage.
