Summary

Chapter 1 - The book opens with Officer Bernadette Manuelito, affectionately referred to as Bernie, having breakfast with some of her fellow police officers. Officer Largo frequently hosts these events, using it as a chance to catch up with the other officers and to work on cases. He always invites the legendary retired detective, Joe Leaphorn. Everyone looks up to Leaphorn and treats him like he is still on the force. He has trained many of the officers and has an amazing arrest record. After the meeting, Leaphorn leaves the restaurant. Bernie is getting ready to leave as well since she has just gotten a call from her husband and fellow officer, Jim Chee. Before she can react, she sees someone quickly get out of their car, shoot Leaphorn in the head, and run off.
