Chapters 27-33 Summary
In chapter twenty-seven, Keith learns that Annie waited until one and then left. Annie left Keith a letter that makes it clear that she believes Keith did not make their meeting because he had cold feet. Keith is disappointed and soon returns home, alone. The following day, Keith goes to the church in town to see Annie. They do not speak, but Keith watches her as she sings in the choir. Afterward, Keith stops by his Aunt Betty's house to ask her to watch the farm when he leaves on Monday.
In chapter twenty-eight, Annie makes a surprise visit to Keith's house. Keith convinces Annie to run away with him when he learns that Cliff is still away, fishing at his cabin in Michigan. Annie agrees.
