Summary
Lucas receives his first payment from the factory, and he decides to buy a gift for Catherine before he goes to warn her of the possible dangers around her. Most of the shops are closed by the time Lucas leaves work, but he uses most of his pay to buy a (likely stolen) fine ceramic bowl from a young boy on the street. Lucas brings the bowl to Catherine’s rooming house, but Catherine does not wish to accept such an extravagant present. Lucas warns her about Simon’s ghost and the dangers of machinery, such as the sewing machines at her job. However, Catherine does not believe him. Lucas goes home and worries that the music box and his father’s breathing apparatus are dangerous. While his parents sleep, he takes the small machines and places them in the hallway...
