Part 2, Chapter 18 - The Van Meers are invited to Paris by Gareth's old friend, Dr. Michael Servo Kouropoulos, over Christmas. There, Kouropoulos tells Gareth he ought to remarry. The contention between Gareth and Kouropolous, as well as Blue's own desire to leave, causes the Van Meers to leave two days early.

Part 2, Chapter 19 - When school resumes, everyone notices that Hannah has cut off almost all of her hair. Jade believes Hannah will have a nervous breakdown. Over break, Milton and Nigel go through Hannah's garage and find thousands of trail maps, as well as books and articles about disappearances. At dinner, Hannah announces they are going on a camping trip on March twenty-sixth.
