Summary
In Chapter 1, Cody’s cell was filled with nearly 2,000 paperback books and a television. The books were gifts from a lady on a pension, and the television was a gift from a charity in Belgium. Cody had cried at his good fortune when he received the television. He had to file a lawsuit to keep more than ten books in his cell and to have shelves to store his books. In the 14 years he had been in jail, Cody had won five lawsuits he filed without an attorney. It was unlikely that he would file any more lawsuits because he was on death row with only three hours to live.
In Chapter 2, Marvin, the head guard, looks in on Cody as Cody is watching the news about his execution. The governor has still not made a decision on his petition for clemency.
