Patricia Campbell

Patricia is the main character in the novel. She grew up in South Carolina and went to college to be a nurse. She worked as a nurse for several years until she met Carter. Once they were married, they started having children. Patricia stayed home to take care of her children, Blue and Korey. Once the children were in school, Patricia remained at home to take care of the house and her mother-in-law, Miss Mary.

Patricia missed the excitement of being a nurse and having a career of her own. Her husband and children did not appreciate her and she did not have any friends to confide in. She decided that the answer to her problems was to join a book club, but the first one she joined was too pretentious for her tastes.
