Summary

This section takes place three years later in October of 1996. Patricia and Carter drove to Slick’s house for book club. Slick and her husband had redone their home glamorously. They had become very wealthy, as had Patricia and her other friends. None of them, besides Slick, had come to visit her in the hospital when she had tried to kill herself. Slick was the only one Patricia cared about now. She was friendly with Maryellen and Kitty, but she felt downright hostile toward Grace.

Over forty wealthy and fabulous people were regulars at “book club.” James had turned their book club into a social event involving all the husbands. They read male-centric authors like Michael Chrichton and Tom Clancy. Patricia said hello to James and gave him a hug, but she could not quit seeing him in the van...
