Summary

This section is labeled July of 1993. James started coming over for dessert every night. Patricia was glad, because her husband kept staying at work late and her daughter kept heading off for slumber parties since their air conditioning was broken. She was very afraid after the incident with the man on the roof, but she gradually started to feel safer. She went to Grace’s fancy birthday party and felt self-conscious about all the women starting at her ear. While they were gone, Mrs. Greene stayed home with Miss Mary. Miss Mary told her she had found a picture of Hoyt Pickens. A flood of rats entered the house and attacked them and the dog, Ragtag.

Miss Mary died in the hospital, while Mrs. Greene and Ragtag lived. Patricia’s friends helped her clean up the house and organize the funeral...
