Chapter Eight Summary
Chapter Eight gives the reader another view of the empty-headed sisters and mother. They come in with their very fancy and expensive gloves to show Alexia. Their father has had two drinks in a matter of a few minutes and still looks a little green. He has waved his money goodbye with the gloves and the dresses. Alexia insults her mother by asking if she is going to wear something that is suited to a woman half her age. The mother punishes Alexia by refusing to allow her to go to one of society parties. Exactly as Alexia had planned. As the family breaks up to go their separate ways, Ivy who had been caught in the family thing, takes her leave. Ivy says as she passes Alexia, "You never planned to attend, did you?" Alexia admits that she had maneuvered...
