Chapter One Summary

Miss Alexia Tarabotti is a spinster and a preternatural in London. The preternatural has no soul and she could translate a vampire or werewolf into a human. The vampires and werewolves and the supernatural were accepted in London at this time. The natural and supernatural had learned to live together and had rules that fit into the manners of the day. Alexia becomes hungry at a ball and asks for some refreshments from the butler to be served in the library. She relaxes on a sofa when a vampire makes his appearance and tries to bite her neck. Alexia is very distressed that he didn't introduce himself before trying to bite. She forces him away from her. His fangs retract when he touches the preternatural.
