Structure

Sorted is divided into 27 chapters, plus an introduction and a note on language and terminology at the start of the book. It is not further divided into parts to sections, which gives the book a cohesive structure and reinforces the idea that it is a continuous narrative. Furthering this idea is the fact that the book is structured chronologically, from Jackson's birth to the present day at the time of publication. Exceptions to this chronological and linear narrative are the introduction and note on language. The note on language is essentially a glossary that exists outside of chronology or narrative, while the introduction is written from Jackson's position as the author in the present day. The two first sections frame and contextualize the book separate from the rest of its chronological structure.
