Chapters 5-8 Summary
In Chapter 5, Sophie puts the kids to bed and then goes out to sit on the porch swing. Carter joins her after a few minutes, bringing with him a bag of groceries for Sophie and the Littles. Sophie is grateful, but she knows showing too much gratefulness will only embarrass Carter, so she does not say what is on her mind. Instead, Sophie looks at the long scar on Carter's arm and thinks of the torture he suffered at his own father's hands. In a moment of vulnerability, Sophie lays her hand on Carter's even though they never touch during these moments alone. Carter responds by holding her hand.
