Summary
“Night” begins as the sun sets and the moon rises, “like a flower/in heaven’s high bower” (21). The speaker bids farewell to the green fields of day and observes the angels who appear in the night and “pour blessing/and joy without ceasing” (21). The angels watch over all of the earth’s creatures as they sleep, protecting the tired and meek whenever they can. While they seek to protect all of the animals, they are not always able to save them as the “wolves and tigers howl for prey,” and so the angels receive the prey in heaven (21). The predators, such as the lion, are also received in heaven, where they are able to lie side by side with the sleeping lambs who they now guard over.
