Summary
Back in Shiprock, Leaphorn consults his personal notebook and begins to more vividly remember his personal encounters with Richard Horseman when he was a child. Leaphorn gets an email from the Department of Family Services. An attached file contains Horseman's extensive record of petty crimes, and also the information that his younger brother had died.
Chee, Bernie, and Dashee all have breakfast in Tuba City, and Bernie decides that she will go on a hike instead of attending the deliberations. She is started on the trail when she is approached by a man who turns out to be her sister Darleen's boyfriend, Clayton Secody. Clayton tells her that Bernie had mistakenly taken the keys to Chee's police car. They hike back to the trailhead, and meet up with Darleen. As they all drive back to Tuba City, Bernie receives a call from Lona...
