Summary
Chapter 9 begins with Tristan and Iris on their way to visit their grandmother, “the only Deaf person [Iris gets] to talk to anymore” (45). Grandma lives in Oak Manor, “an apartment complex for old people,” having been convinced by Iris’s mother to do so after driving one hundred miles to walk along the beach where they used to live by herself (47). Upon visiting, Grandma brings up to Iris’s father that she might have a better time at school in Bridgewood, a district nearby with “a big deaf education program” (49). Her father, speaking aloud to Grandma (who can hear, but very little), tells her that “‘Iris has gotten used to her school,’” much to Iris’s chagrin (51). He basically tells Grandma that there is no chance of her transferring. Grandma has not been socializing much with the other people in her apartment complex...
