Relationships
One of the primary themes running through the novel is relationships. In this particular novel, the relationships start out as functions of the village rather than true relationships. In the village where Claire lives, every person has an assignment, a role that they are supposed to play. Parents do not even create and give birth to their own children, so there is a lack of emotion and bonds in the relationships people in the village form.
Additionally, the villagers are forced to take pills. The pills seem to suppress emotions and feelings. In Part I of the book, the relationships exist as a formality rather than as true interaction among the characters. This starts to change after Claire gives birth to Gabe and starts interacting with the baby.
When Claire lives in the new village, she starts to learn what it is like to form friendships and family...
