Book I Chapters 9 and 10 Summary
When the others return from the first day's ceremony, Claire finds out that even though Dmitri applied for a spouse, he didn't get one. Jeanette, one of her co-workers, says they named one of the babies Paul, which means her father is gone, since they only regive names when people die.
Claire takes a walk after dinner. Everyone turned in early from the long day at the ceremony, and the second day of the ceremony looming before them. Claire looks at the bridge that leads to Elsewhere. She thinks about what might lie beyond and that she doesn't know anyone who has ever traveled Elsewhere.
