Book I Chapters 7 and 8 Summary

The male attendant recognizes Claire. He mentions the babies are being assigned to their families in December. He says Thirty-six is not being assigned because they want to give him another year to mature. He whispers to Claire that he takes the baby home at night with him so he doesn't wake up the other babies.

When Thirty-six cries, Claire volunteers to pick him up. The male attendant tells her to take him in the hall. While Claire gets the baby to fall asleep, she thinks about walking out with the baby. When she returns to the room, however, she realizes the baby has a security bracelet around his ankle. The male attendant says he removes it before taking the baby home with him at night.
