Summary

Chapter 13 begins with Jared arriving at his father’s apartment and learning that he already wasted all the money from his last disability check on alcohol and drugs. His father initially tries to lie to him and tell him he did not get the check at all. Jared tells him he will not come back after giving him more rent money.

In chapter 14, the narration recounts what happened with David. When he was with Jared’s mother, he took it upon himself to beat Jared when a bad report card came home. Jared’s mom comes in and shoots David’s feet with a nail gun, sticking him to the floor, and makes Jared do the same to prove to David he is not afraid of him.
