Penelope
Penelope is a Mexican-American young adult who lives with her parents and siblings. She dislikes going to nursing school and has been deceiving her parents for months about her attendance. She dreams of taking over her father’s neighborhood taco shop and she tries to gather the courage to tell her parents her plans. When she does, they kick her out of the house and she begins her journey towards adulthood, trying to find a way to make enough money to support herself while repairing her relationship with her parents and forming a new one with Xander. Pen’s parents are so unenthusiastic about her plan to run the taco shop because they want her to have a better life than they were able to have. They emphasize that this is the entire reason they worked so hard since immigrating from Mexico.
