Chapter 3 Summary

Ever since Alexandra's father died, and her mother found out that he had another family in London, Mrs. Lawrence became useless. Mrs. Lawrence decided that the only way to save the family was to marry off Alexandra to a wealthy family and rescue them both from the impoverished life they were living. Her mother tells her that she will be meeting with the Helmsleysand that she was planning on marrying her off to their son, Will. Alexandra tells her that she does not want to marry Will because she does not love him, but her mother says this is best because that way he will never be able to hurt her the way her father did to them.
