Summary
Chapter 7
Eleanor and Mary wash her dress, which smells of the dead. Mary is bribed into silence with a pair of gloves. Eleanor then goes on a ride with Clarence. He asks her for discretion about Friday night’s meeting. Clarence explains that Frederick Weathers was his friend, and he had sent his footman to get a newspaper. Allison does not yet know, and Frederick’s father has declined to run for council again, compromising Clarence’s own campaign. Clarence also tells Eleanor to stay away from the Spirit-Hunters, that they are low-life, disreputable people. Eleanor doesn’t agree. Eleanor convinces Clarence to go by Laurel Hill Cemetery. They look inside and see one of the undead. Eleanor wants to see where it is going by following it along the fence. Clarence protests. It turns out he was a year ahead of Elijah...
