WAT-R
The water product WAT-R symbolizes illusion. WAT-R, although meant as a replacement for water, is a synthetic version of the real element. It does not taste or feel like water, and neither does it accomplish the same hydrating effects. Soon enough, the characters also discover that the additives in WAT-R make it harmful, and even deadly, to its consumers. The author uses WAT-R to create a commentary on the food and drug industry, and to illustrate the ways in which American consumers place their trust in corporations over the natural world.
