Summary
In Chapter 3, Cassidy wakes up at "the bottom of [her] dry swimming pool" (63). While other people have filled their pools with WAT-R, Cassidy leaves her empty. Years ago, she told her sister June that a pool would be "the first thing" she would "buy for them" after signing her Kid Detective contract (64).
Patrick arrives at the house. The "expensive, lonesome space" makes him feel "sympathy" and "envy" (65). When he finds Cassidy outside, he is annoyed that she is not ready. They are already late for her fitting. Cassidy seems unfazed. When Patrick yells at her, she calls Brenda. He overhears part of the conversation, in which Cassidy accuses him of attacking her. The tone of the conversation changes, when Cassidy successfully rearranges “the terms of [her]payment” (67).
On their way out of Cassidy's neighborhood, Secret Sunset, Patrick observes the odd arrangement and appearance...
