Point of View
The point of view of Sold on a Monday is third person, told through the alternating perspectives of Ellis and Lily, both offering reliable narratives with substantial development. The reader is invited to emotionally invest with Ellis as we learn of the loss of his brother and the strained upbringing that resulted from that unexpected tragedy. We learn of the guilt carried by his father and how deeply it affected Ellis’s own desire to be seen and heard in his subsequent profession. We are able to relate to Ellis’s desperation as he tries to fall into his father’s good graces, but we are also able to understand his father’s rejection of Ellis’s bids for approval through excessive spending. As Ellis strives to find the Dillard children and reunite them with their mother, we are able to sympathize with his need...
