Laurel Township, Pennsylvania
Laurel Township is where the Dillards live and where Ellis first sees the children for sale at the beginning of the novel. Without coming upon the children in Laurel Township on his way back from a quilting exhibition, he would not have taken the photograph that skyrocketed his career. At the same time, had he not taken the second photo of the Dillard children, they would not have been sold, and he would have saved himself a lot of guilt and trouble retrieving them.
The Philadelphia Examiner
The Philadelphia Examiner is the newspaper at which Ellis begins his career, and it is the newspaper at which he catches his big break in the form of the Dillard story. It is also the newspaper at which Lily continues to work after Ellis leaves, and where she meets both Ellis and Clayton.
