Summary
Lily has returned to work after Samuel’s recovery to be met with an inquisition from the chief. Just as Alfred had contacted Ellis’s boss about killing the profile piece on him, Sylvia has presumably contacted Lily’s boss to do the same. Lily manages to convince the chief that she is not seeking employment elsewhere, and in an ambitious bid, manages to also sell him on the idea of her own column about single parenting. The chief agrees, while also divulging his own personal history of having been raised by a single mother.
Lily feels invincible, especially as a story breaks out about a recent radio broadcast of a personal appeal made by Mrs. Lindbergh concerning her kidnapped son’s favorite foods – just as Lily had proposed – revealing that it had led to an optimistic tip.
