Summary
After the Opera, Lavinia refuses to acknowledge the events of that evening and Louise follows suit. Louise misses more and more work and spends more time providing emotional support to Lavinia or going where she wants. Louise texts Rex and they decide to “accidentally” bump into each other at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which both enjoy. One night, Louise returns from tutoring and Lavinia is not at the apartment to let her in, and is not answering her phone. Unsure of what to do, Louise goes to the Carlyle Hotel. She talks with Athena Maidenhead at the bar, who questions her about her relationship with Lavinia. When Louise explains that she has known Lavinia for around six months, Athena suggests that Louise only has another couple of months and should think of a backup plan.
