Seattle
Seattle is where Ijeoma Oluo has lived for most of her life and it is where many of the personal stories and anecdotes in the book take place. Oluo identifies Seattle as a predominantly white city, and she therefore has often felt that she does not fit in. Her position as a black woman in Seattle underscores her identity as a member of a minority group in her community and this has impacted many of her life experiences. When Oluo joins a community group for people of color in Seattle as an adult, it is the first time that she really finds her community and stops feeling lonely in her home city. However, joining this group also prompts her to reflect on her own privilege within a wider community of people of color in the surrounding areas.
