Summary
In Chapter Three, Oluo writes about her white mother and how they have navigated race over the years. Because her mother is white, there has always been a big part of Oluo's life that her mother has been unable to understand. Even her mother, who has three black children whom she loves dearly and who she believes can "rule the world," makes mistakes when talking about race and engaging with people of color (38). One such incident prompts Oluo and her mother to sit down and have a big conversation about race, how to engage with people of color more respectfully, and how to better support them.
