High Prairie
High Prairie is the name of the area southwest of Chicago where Selina goes to become a school teacher. The area is predominantly Dutch and most of the people are farmers. Selina is immediately captivated by the beauty of the fields and farms. The people who have always lived there don't notice the abundance of colors that change with the seasonal crops, but Selina continues to enjoy the wonder of it even after she's dealt with the harsh realities of life there. There is a school and a church, and the community is very reserved in their attitudes. Selina faces a great deal of criticism when she steps out of her appointed role as housewife and works on the farm.
