Summary

In Chapter 16, Dirk goes into the military. He spends most of his time at Fort Sheridan where he becomes an officer and then trains other officers. He wants to go to France, mainly because he is tired of the endless dinners and even of Paula and his mother. He is transferred to Paris just two months before the end of the war. Selina provides food for many families while their men are gone to war. When Dirk returns, Paula convinces him to go on a drive to sell Liberty Bonds. He does and discovers that he's very good at it. Within two months, he's made as much money as he made in a year as an architect. Selina believes that Dirk will return to architecture and it takes some time before she realizes she's wrong.
