Summary

In Chapter 3, Selina arrives at the Pool farm. She's struck by how the windows all shine, which she later learns is a “mark of social standing” in the community. There are clothes on the line. Selina expects Klaas to help her get down from the wagon but he begins unloading the empty boxes from the back instead. She is surprised that Maartje looks much older than she'd expected.

Maartje takes Selina to the small bedroom that she'll use during her stay. There is a beautiful chest in the room and Selina learns it's been handed down through generations of Maartje's family. Maartje shows Selina the bridal gown, cap, and shoes inside. Selina discovers that there's a small stove in her room but it never provides any real heat and her room stays cold all winter.
