Summary
As the story opens, the reader is briefly introduced to the child nicknamed Sobig and his mother, Selina Peake DeJong. His name was Dirk DeJohn and he was called Sobig until he was about 10 and began to insist he'd outgrown the nickname. When Dirk was very young, she would ask him how big he was. He would hold out his arms as wide as possible and say, “So Big.” That's how the nickname came into being. His mother was always busy with work but always took time to pay attention to him. She imagined a bright and wonderful life ahead of him. It seemed she should have been happy when Dirk grew into a successful businessman with custom tailored suits and an elegant lifestyle, but she always felt she'd both failed him and been cheated by his particular kind of success.
