Summary
In Chapter 20, Strafford drives to Ballyglass from Dublin. He goes to Ballyglass House to search for Jenkins, but Jenkins is still not there. Strafford phones Hackett to tell him about the conversation with McQuaid. Strafford says that he will meet with the town’s local constable, Radford. However, Strafford has deduced from local rumors that Radford is an alcoholic and an incompetent police officer. Strafford hangs up the phone and sees Sylvia. She says that she worries Lawless’ death was her fault. She recounts a conversation in which Lawless seemed to imply that he held romantic feelings for Sylvia. Sylvia worries that he repeatedly visited the house to see her. Sylvia then trails off and mentions that Dr. Hafner prescribes medicine to her.
