When Alex starts going over the falls in Chapter 20, he has a moment to think before the plunge. He knows from his earlier training that he should hold his breath and aim for the white water at the base of the falls because the air in the water will act like a cushion. He miraculously survives the falls, but the pontoon fills up with water and drags him beneath the surface. He struggles to break free before losing his held breath, and just as it seems he will drown, he gets a leg loose, then his other and pulls hard with his arms to the surface.
