Summary
In Chapter 5, Tom Jones, the new choral director at Victor’s school, came into Brother Connolly’s – commonly called Patch – math classroom to listen to boys sing. Tom Jones told the boys with nice voices to wait outside. Outside, the boys did not want to join a choir, but they knew “we wouldn’t have a choice” (50). Tom Jones took them to the choir room, located in an obscure part of the school, for practice. After that first day, he told the boys they must continue to meet for choir practice. Every day, they had to learn and practice singing a mass.
One day, Patch was no longer their math teacher; someone saw him “fainting the day before” (53). The boys knew Patch was very old. The Head Brother introduced them to their new teacher, Mister McDevitt, who the boys started calling “Super Cool...
