Jean's House

Jean lives alone with her mother. Ever since she ended her affair with Frank and had an abortion, Jean has become entirely devoted to her mother's care. Her sister's life overseas and her father's death, have also left Jean as her mother's sole caretaker. Because Jean spends so much time in this setting, the house often feels like a stifling trap. Indeed, whenever Jean is not at the office or out performing investigative research, she is at home. The space affords her few liberties in that her mother is constantly present.

The atmosphere of this setting begins to shift after Jean's mother's accident. During Mrs. Swinney's hospitalization, Jean is able to use and occupy the space however she chooses without her mother's judgment.
