Summary

In Chapter 31, Jean updated Roy on the story. Because scientists could not disprove parthenogenesis, Roy disagreed that the story was “completely dead” (273). He tasked Jean with finishing the story in time for Advent.

Meanwhile, because Margaret had moved home, Jean and Howard saw each other less frequently. However, they did maintain their affair.

In Chapter 32, during their meeting, Kitty told Jean about the night an angel visited her on the ward. This was the only male she had ever seen at St. Cecilia’s. He had long hair, touched her gently, and returned her fallen rosary. She only told one nun about the visitation.

In Chapter 33, Jean brought her mother home. She seemed “to take notice of Jean as an individual with her own separate existence” for the first time (288).
