Summary

In Chapter 15, Jean ran into Mrs. Melsom and arranged for her to spend more time with her mother so she could go out again.

In Chapter 16, Jean published her piece “The Unofficial Aunt” (141).

Jean took Margaret to a concert. Afterwards, they walked around talking. Jean was delighted by Margaret’s “charming and unexpected comments” (144). However, she was still unnerved when Margaret mentioned her angels. After tea, they surprised Howard at his shop per Margaret’s request. They helped a customer choose a ruby necklace. Howard was thrilled by the sale. Back at the house, Gretchen said she was glad they had visited Howard. Jean was surprised, having worried the visit was inappropriate.

In Chapter 17, Gretchen invited Jean to come on a family outing to see Howard’s Aunt Edie (152). They went every year to pick apples, picnic, and play tennis.
