Lisa narrates Small Fry through her own first-person perspective. She grows up within inconsistent environments, which makes her feel insecure and powerless at many points in her life. Growing up with her mother, Lisa often feels uncomfortable around her mother’s hippie friends and their unusual ways of life. As Lisa grows older, into her adolescence, she argues with her mother a lot. She feels that she can fight with her mother, whereas she cannot with anyone else in her family, because she knows that her mother loves her no matter what.
