The Guiding Star
The Guiding Star symbolizes Blur’s lack of home. He drives around the country in it, perpetually mobile; it is apparent he does not have an anchored home. As a symbol, the camper forces the reader’s attention to the fact that Blur is alone and drifting through the days. That Blur feels such an attachment to the Star – an inanimate object – highlights the lack of domestic comfort in his life.
The Infant
The infant symbolizes Blur’s desire for a new beginning. Early in the novel, he transports an infant. His thoughts are conflicted about this; in part, he numbs his emotions as is his habit for work, but nevertheless, he feels guilt.
