Summary
In the Prologue to this second section of the novel, Lila wakes in the overgrown remains of her neighborhood. Her police car is covered in rust and the tires are flat. Her house is falling apart, decayed with rot and mold. Lila begins to realize perhaps she is not dreaming but wonders if she is not dreaming, where she is.
In Chapter 1, Terry woke in his home hoping for a few minutes that the smell of bacon meant his wife was awake. In the kitchen, Frank reminded him that he had slept over. He told Terry that Lila had disappeared and that Terry was now sheriff. Frank helped Terry fill out his waning department with volunteers. Among those deputized were Frank, Don and Eric Blass.
